About the technique:

In kanchipuram silk weaving the term korvai refers to a specific technique used to create contrasting borders on the sari. The word "korvai" itself means "connection" or "linking." Here are the key aspects:

Contrasting Borders: Korvai technique is known for its contrasting and vibrant borders. The body of the sari and the borders are often in different colors and patterns, which are meticulously woven together.
Double Shuttle Weaving: This technique involves using two different shuttles—one for the body of the sari and another for the border. The weaver carefully interlinks the two parts to create a seamless connection.
Labor-Intensive Process: Korvai weaving is highly labor-intensive and requires skilled artisans. The process involves precise and intricate handwork to ensure that the transition between the body and the border is smooth and aligned.

Durability and Strength: The korvai technique not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also adds strength to the sari, making it durable and long-lasting.

Traditional Patterns and Motifs: Kanchipuram saris often feature traditional motifs such as temples, flowers, and animals, which are accentuated by the korvai technique, giving the sari a rich and regal look.

The korvai technique is a hallmark of Kanchipuram silk saris, contributing to their uniqueness and esteemed status in Indian textile artistry.
